The Congress of Young Orientalists of Russia and the CIS was held from 3 to 5 October 2012. It was attended by more than 100 young scientists from 36 research centers, higher educational institutions and museums in Russia and the CIS countries.
In the course of training, the topic "Preserving traditions, continuity and research priorities in Russian Oriental studies" was chosen, followed by the topic "Updating the problems of modern Oriental studies in the global world".
The congress was opened by the Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Moscow State University, M. S. Meyer, whose report included a retrospective review of the features of educational programs for training orientalists for several generations, their dynamics and compliance with the changing tasks of scientific and practical Oriental studies. M. S. Meyer shared memories of his students, many of whom were present in the hall.
The role of young Orientalists of academic institutes in the activities of the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as Academician-Secretary of the Department A. P. Derevyanko, were highlighted in a speech by the Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. G. Guskov (IRI RAS).
The assessment of the contribution of young Orientalists to the fund of scientific research, instructions on updating scientific research and the need to preserve the continuity of traditions and schools of Russian Oriental studies were made in the speeches of the Deputy Minister. E. V. Molodyakova, Director of the Institute of Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and N. G. Romanova, Scientific Secretary of the Institute.
Zav. D. D. Vasiliev, himself a former chairman of the Council of Young Scientists, shared his memories of the first schools held in the 1980s with the Department of Oriental History of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Welcoming messages to the Congress of young scientists were sent by the representative of the scientific youth of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan G. The congress was held in four sections. At the meeting of philologists-orientalists, reports on the problems of Oriental linguistics were heard: "The origins of research on the Chinese language in Russia: between the lines (based on handwritten materials of the late XVIII-early XIX centuries) " K. A. Kozhi (Institute of Chinese Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences), which considered the origins of the Russian Sinological tradition-
based on such sources as letters from O. Iakinf (Bichurin), O. Pyotr Kamensky, O. Daniil Sivilov, and others; " Phraseological units with the "leg" component as the cultural code of the Korean people" by M. V. Mikhailova (Vladivostok, FEFU); "Three Images of Russia in modern Mongolia" by V. A. Rodionov (Ulan-Ude, BSU).
At the section devoted to religion and philosophy in the East, presentations were made on "International factors of politicization of Islam" by P. M. Mamaraev (Makhachkala), who examined the impact of globalization on the formation of political movements in Islam; "Self-identification of English Muslims: a Legal Aspect" by V. V. Thor (Moscow, Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences), who analyzed the desire of English Muslims to preserve their identity; " The relationship of neo-universalist religious concepts of the East with the ideology of Western globalism (on the example of Baha'iism)" by L. F. Melikova (Institute of National Academy of Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences), who studied the experience of Baha'i globalism and Western neoliberal ideology; "Comparative analysis of the concepts of" direct comprehension "(aparokshanubhuti) and "self-recognition" (pratyabhijna) in the monistic systems of Shankara and Abhinavagupta " by S. V. Lobanov (Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences); "Muslim clergy of the Republic of Bashkortostan: social and professional structure" Z. R. Khabibullina (Ufa, UNC RAS), who paid attention to the factors that influenced the quantitative and qualitative changes in the clergy of the period under review (the existence of Islam in Soviet conditions, the problem with obtaining Muslim education in Russia and abroad, the lack of prospects for young people, and migration processes).
One session was devoted to the consideration of ethnic processes and geopolitical problems of the modern East. The participants 'attention was drawn to the following reports:" General and special features in the development of ethnic processes in multicultural societies of Central Asia" by T. V. Marmontova (Astana, Kazakhstan), who touched upon the problems of "national revival" in the Central Asian region after the collapse of the USSR and the formation, construction and development of "new identities"; "A new format of research in Oriental studies (e-Research) "by V. V. Ivanova (St. Petersburg, Kunstkamera), who characterized the eastern segments of the Internet as a new object for studying domestic researchers, combining local and global elements; "Review of existing Russian modern geopolitical concepts" by S. A. Pritchin (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences).
M. Y. Kuznetsova Literature and Folklore Section. (Vladivostok, FEFU) in her report "The work of Lu Xin and Shen Congwen: A worldview dialogue", she tried to identify commonalities and differences in the views of these major Chinese writers of the XX century on the world and literary creativity, the past, present and future of China, and the ways of their artistic expression. M. V. Kobylina (St. Petersburg State University) covered" The status of women in Indian society: changing orientations (based on the works of Krishna Sobti)". Reports on Caucasian rituals and folklore were devoted to "The status of women in the traditional society of Ossetians" by E. I. Tavasieva (Vladikavkaz), who examined the duality of the status of women among Ossetians, combining high social status outside of the family, there are strict and harsh family etiquette, and "Symbolism of paremias with an animalistic component in the Ossetian wedding ritual text" by F. O. Abayeva (Vladikavkaz).
At the section devoted to the study of Eastern sources and the creation of electronic source and cartographic databases, Yu. A. Averyanov (IB RAS) in his report "Ottoman cartography in the works of Kyatib Celebi (Haji Khalifa, 1608-1657)" demonstrated and analyzed the maps contained in the works of the Ottoman traveler Kyatib Celebi.) in the report "Database of early medieval North Indian charters and opportunities for reconstructing the history of North India in the Early Middle Ages", he introduced the audience to what the charters were in the described era, with their internal and external form, with the peculiarities of their functioning and distribution over the territory of North India, including by centuries (from the beginning of the 20th century). IV to XIV centuries.The spatial directions of their evolution were considered. The report is based on the" Diplomatica Indica Database " (DIDB), which consists of 1,100 North Indian charters published in various catalogues, specialized collections of inscriptions and periodicals in India, Europe and America over the past two centuries. Special attention was paid to the complex of awarded letters of Odisha, or Orissa - their typology, distribution both inside and outside the modern state of Odisha, and how they relate to other Odisha inscriptions. This part of the report was based on Snigdhi Tripathi's monograph Descriptive Topographical Catalog of Orissan Inscriptions,
published in 2010 by Manohar Publishing House (New Delhi). Concluding the report, A. A. Stolyarov expressed a number of ideas on the directions of reconstruction of the political and socio-economic history of North India in the early Middle Ages. In his report "Experience in preparing a historical and cultural map of Asia Minor", AD. Vasiliev (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) demonstrated an interactive map of historical monuments in the region of modern Turkey.
Then the reports of a group of Egyptologists were heard. M. A. Lebedev's presentation "Creating epigraphic databases in Egyptology" was devoted to the analysis of international experience in creating Egyptological databases based on epigraphic sources, and a new project to create an electronic multi-level database of epigraphic sources based on the Corpus program with the capabilities of complex search and statistical analysis of information. S. E. Malykh's report "Database on Ancient Egyptian votive ceramics of the Ancient Kingdom era: opportunities and prospects for applying quantitative methods for studying mass archaeological material" presented a typological analysis of votive ceramics, which are models of clay vessels of open and closed forms of miniature sizes. It was shown how the use of quantitative methods and the creation of a computer database allows us to trace the stages of evolution of the shape of votive plates and bowls and identify individual morphological types that have a clear chronological link. E. E.'s speech "Databases of archaeological materials (on the example of excavations of the Russian concession zone of the eastern Giza necropolis)" was a kind of master class, which demonstrated the original method of submitting material with the maximum possible information content of the compiled maps, developed by domestic archaeologists based on the experience of many years of work and materials of Russian archaeological expeditions in Egypt and Sudan.
O. M. Kournikova's report "Cartographic material of the Crimean Peninsula: Research and analysis", based on materials from Russian archives and libraries, summarized the history of the peninsula's exploration by European scientists. D. D. Vasiliev (IV RAS) in the report "I. F. Tabbert von Stralenberg map as a source of the XVIII century on the history of scientific study of the Asian part of the Crimean Peninsula". Russia" gave a description of a relatively poorly studied map compiled by I. F. Tabbert von Stralenberg, an officer of the army of Charles XII, who was captured after the Battle of Poltava, a geographer, linguist and writer. The map is rich in information on ethnic zoning, ancient monuments, and trade routes in Asian Russia and neighboring territories. These materials can be presented in the form of a database on ethnohistorical geography, contact zones, migrations and natural resources of a vast territory, which still retains both fundamental and applied significance.
V. T. Tepkeev (Elista, KIGI RAS), in his report "Oirat settlement in the XVI century", based on the analysis of newly identified archival materials, concluded that as a result of migration, by the middle of the XVII century, the Oirats occupied the territory from the Volga-Don interfluve to Northern Tibet. There are four main political groupings of the Oirat ulus: the Volga ulus in the Northern Caspian region; the Siberian ulus in Southwestern Siberia; the Dzungarian ulus in Central Asia; and the Kukunor ulus in Tibet. O. S. Rinchinov and Ts. P. Vannikova (both Ulan-Ude, IMBT SB RAS) presented the report " GIS "Buddhist Monasteries of Mongolia": approaches to implementation", in which they spoke about the following issues:- the resource "Buddhist Monasteries of Mongolia", posted on the portal of the Center for Oriental Manuscripts and Woodcuts of IMBT SB RAS (URL: http://monasteries.imbtarchive.ru/). It was based on the technology of creating Google Maps maps. This project was a pilot project that tested the use of the Google Maps API 3.0 and elements of AJAX technology for developing an interactive map application. It contains information on more than 700 historical and modern Buddhist monasteries and temples in Mongolia, collected in the monograph "Mongol sum hiidiin tuuhen tovchon" (2009).
Indian archaeologist D. Dayalan (Bangalore) in his report "The role of trade and Tamil merchants in the spread of Buddhism" demonstrated his map of South India, which contains 127 Buddhist monuments (objects) on the territory of Tamil Nadu, dating back to the ancient and early Medieval period, starting from the II century BC. e. Hungarian orientalist M. Dobrovich (Budapest) in his report "The titulature of Western Turkic peoples". leaders " told about titles
khagans of the Western Turkic Khaganate of the seventh century. and about the traditions of ceremonial and etiquette laid down by the Turkic rulers.
Evening sessions were also held in four sections. Meeting prepared under the supervision of the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors. Director of the Institute of Political Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences V. Ya. Belokrenitsky, was devoted to political science and international relations. The following reports were presented: "Azerbaijan-Iran relations in the current period: a view through the prism of nation-building and the secular model of statehood existing in Azerbaijan" by G. Mirzayev (Baku), which analyzed the causes of tension in the current Azerbaijani-Iranian relations. S. A. Talibly (Baku) reviewed the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (1979-2005). The topic of K. G. Muratshina's speech (Yekaterinburg) is "Inter-parliamentary cooperation between Russia and China". The development of the mechanism of interaction between both chambers of the Russian Parliament and their opponents in China was traced. The report of Z. V. Kananchev (Vienna, Austria) "The Udin factor of the Karabakh settlement" is devoted to the present and past of Udin in the context of the development of ideas of national statehood in the region. Shilova (HSE) reviewed the consequences of terrorist attacks in Israel from the point of view of the impact of terrorism on the socio-political, economic, cultural and military-technical development of Israel and Palestinian society. N. A. Filin (RSUH) noted the peculiarities of terrorist activity in Iran in connection with the activities of the Kurdistan Free Life Party organization. Pavel Shlykov (ISAA MSU) in his report "The process of deskularization in Turkey: dynamics and main determinants" examined the process of Islamization in Turkey and the activation of political Islam. D. V. Zhigulskaya's presentation " Alevite traditions in modern Turkey "is dedicated to the national minority in Turkey - the Alevites. N. M. Zhukov's report" Varosha no man's land " considered the process of interaction between the Turkish and Greek communities of Cyprus, and also analyzed the problem of property that arose as a result of the conflict. The topic of A. G. Kochieva's speech is "The education system in the North Caucasus in the 40s-50s of the XIX century: between regionalism and centralism".
At the section devoted to the problems of ancient and medieval history of the East, the following reports were heard: D. V. Vozchikov (Yekaterinburg) "Nobilissima insula: Ceylon through the eyes of the Venetian traveler Niccolo Conti", in which the speaker spoke about the memories and impressions of visiting the island of one of the first Europeans; S. M. Kazimov (Vladikavkaz) in the report " Social essence amanats in the North Caucasus (late XVIII - first half of the XIX century) "analyzed the state practice that existed in the Russian Empire of taking honorary hostages of amanats, educating them in the Russian environment and further using them as agents of influence of tsarist Russia. M. A. Lebedev (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) in the report" Economic and foreign policy activity of the Ancient Egyptian state beyond the borders of D. M. Timokhin (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) studied the Arab-Persian sources about the battle of the Indus River in 1221 and its consequences. In his report "The fate of the last ruler Jetishar Bek-Kula Bek in Russian and Ottoman archival documents", V. V. Prudnikov (IB RAS)examined one of the little-known episodes of the "Big Game" in Central Asia, related to the question of the existence of the independent Muslim state of Yakub Bek in Kashgar in the 60-70 years of the XIX century made a report " Representations of Norman authors of the XI-XI centuries. about Byzantium and the Byzantines".

Modernization processes in the East in modern and contemporary times. In the report of K. V. Ivanov (Irkutsk) " Japan's policy in Korea in the first half of the XX century . as an embed attempt in
western colonial discourse " considered Japan's attempt to join the colonial processes in the first half of the 20th century. T. D. Vishnevsky (Kazan) presented a comprehensive analysis of Soviet historiography on the topic "Reflection of the Civil War in China 1946-1949 in Soviet historical science". I. V. Kulagin's report "Understanding State power in Shiism after the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979" shows how the ideas of Imam Khomeini's "velayat-i faqh" were formed and applied in practice, who considered the people to be the vehicle of the divine will, legitimizing power. The topic of the report by D. A. Mileev (Institute of Internal Affairs of the Russian Academy of Sciences) is " The influence of Germany on the socio-political reforms of the Japanese state (German emphasis on Japanese modernization)". I. Yu. Zuenko (Vladivostok) in his report "Trends in the development of self-government of urban residents in the PRC" highlighted the activities of urban residents ' committees of the PRC as a grass-roots element of the municipal administration system. Koroleva (IV RAS) presented the history of the creation of the legal framework in China and showed its impact on modern law-making processes in the country. In her report titled "The Activities of New Japanese Religious Movements Abroad", Dr. S. Lepekhova (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) examined the experience of Japanese religious movements in Latin America and Southeast Asia using the example of such organizations as Soka Gakkai, Seite-no ie, and O. I. Kurto Sekai Kyusei (N. N. Kurto Institute of International Relations). Miklukho-Maklaya RAS) in the report "Modern Russian communities in China" showed the reasons for the formation of Russian-speaking communities in China and their current state.
At the final plenary session, the participants expressed their gratitude to the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the initiative to hold the congress, to the organizing committee for organizing it, and to the Presidium and the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences for their financial support.
A number of decisions were made, in particular on the need for regular meetings of graduate students and young scientists; on publishing the materials of the congress; on holding the Second Congress in 2013 in Baku on the basis of the Center for Strategic Studies of Azerbaijan and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
