The prominent scientist-physicist, talented engineer and brilliant organizer, who almost 30 years (1960-1988) headed the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Power, today the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", and more than 10 years--the USSR AS (1975-1986), Acad. Anatoly Alexandrov, whose 110th birth anniversary was celebrated by the national scientific community on February 13, 2013, is a symbolic figure of the past century. Judging by the number of solved scientific and technical problems of a state level--development of an anti-mine-and-torpedo defense system for the USSR Navy, building of nuclear reactors to produce plutonium, power units for nuclear electric-power stations, creation of the first Soviet nuclear submarine, development of a powerful underwater and ice-breaking fleet-- Anatoly Alexandrov, very likely, is an unconditional leader in the history of national science. It would be very difficult to find another man, who managed to put together so many practical achievements. He received all honors he could get in our country as an outstanding scientist (thrice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Stalin, Lenin and USSR State awards, possessor of nine Orders of Lenin), but the highest of them were granted by time. Alexandrov was over 80, but he continued working without a mere hint at a weakness of an old age, creative depression or spiritual fatigue. In fact, it was the way he worked all his life, never stepping back before difficulties and afflictions, keeping the head sound and the spirit creative. The present anniversary is not simply an occasion to recall the man whose many-sided activity still has an influence on the development of a number of scientific and industrial branches; it is an opportunity to show the intellectual wealth of our society to young people who did not know him personally.
