On December 1, 2010, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted an event that can be called a landmark event for all Russian Korean studies. This is a solemn event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Yu. V. Vanin and L. R. Kontsevich, as well as the publication of the multi-volume publication "Russian Korean Studies: Past and Present".
The event was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Russian Federation. The celebrations were organized by the Institute of Oriental Studies with the assistance of the Korea Foundation, the Korean Cultural Center "First of March" and the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Russia.
Opening the meeting, the Deputy Head of the Department Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences E. V. Molodyakova noted that the management of the Institute of Oriental Studies is particularly pleased with the fact that among its employees there are people of whom it has a right to be proud. This fully applies to Yu. V. Vanin (Department of Korea and Mongolia of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and L. R. Kontsevich (Department of Languages of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Russian Academy of Sciences), who, despite their advanced age, remain an example of dedication to science for the younger generation of researchers.
Then the floor was taken by the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Russia Lee Yoon-hyun. He noted that the Institute of Oriental Studies continues to be the flagship of Russian Korean studies, it is well-known both in Russia and abroad. The Ambassador expressed the hope that the young staff of the Institute will continue to make a worthy contribution both to the study of history and to strengthening mutual understanding between the peoples of Russia and Korea.
