How to protect yourself in a megacity: an algorithm for behavior during theft

You came for a vacation or on a business trip. You are in a big city, where everything is new, interesting, but where there are also many people and, unfortunately, not fewer pickpockets. You have lost a phone, a bag, or documents. Your heart is going into your feet. What to do? Where to run? What if you have no money or connection? In this article, we will not just give advice, we will build a clear algorithm of actions. Step by step. From the moment you realize that something is missing, to the moment you return home or continue your journey.

Part one: before it happens

The best protection is preparation. In an ideal world, thefts do not happen, but we live in the real world. Therefore, the first and most important stage begins even before the trip.

Digital copy of documents. Take photos of your passport, visa, insurance, driver's license, tickets, and credit cards. Save them in the cloud (Google Drive, iCloud) and in an encrypted form on your email. Send copies to yourself by email and, if possible, to a close person. This will not replace the original, but it can speed up the process at the consulate or police.

Divide money and cards. Do not keep all cash and all cards in one bag or pocket. Spread them out in different places: some in a wallet, some in a hidden pocket, some in a backpack. This way, if one source is lost, you will have a reserve.

Turn on geolocation. Make sure that the \"Find Device\" function is enabled on your phone (for iPhone — \"Locator\", for Android — \"Find Device\"). It is also useful to install an app for real-time tracking that your loved ones can see. This will not only help find the missing item but also save time from panic.

Write down important numbers. Write down the number of the police, consulate, insurance company, and bank for blocking cards on paper (yes, on paper!). Keep this paper separately from your phone and wallet.

Part two: while staying at a tourist center

You are already there. You are enjoying the views. But you are also in a high-risk zone. How to behave to minimize the likelihood of theft?

Do not display your values. Do not take out your phone unnecessarily, do not wave your wallet, do not wear expensive jewelry in sight. Among the crowd of tourists, a pickpocket quickly identifies those who \"shine\" with money.

The bag and backpack are always in front of you. In the subway, on the bus, in line — carry a backpack on your chest or hold the bag so that it is within your sight. The zippers should be facing you, not outward.

Be careful of \"accidental\" collisions. Pickpockets often work in groups: one pushes, distracts, and the other works at that time. If someone suddenly bumped into you or started asking strange questions — instinctively check your pockets.

Do not put your phone in the back pocket of jeans. This is the most popular place for theft. Keep it in the inner pocket of a coat or in a special pocket on the belt.

Do not leave your phone on the table in cafes and restaurants. Especially if you are sitting outside. A moment — and it's gone. Professional thieves work very quickly.

Part three: you realize that something is missing

The scariest moment. You open your bag — and it's gone. Or you feel your pocket — empty. Your heart starts to beat faster. Stop. Your actions now should be calm and sequential.

Step 1. Stop and take a deep breath. Panic is the main enemy. It paralyzes thinking. Take three deep breaths. It will take 10 seconds, but it will save you from impulsive mistakes.

Step 2. Look around. If you are in a crowded place, look around. Perhaps the thief has not gone far, and you will notice him by his behavior. But do not try to catch him alone — it is dangerous.

Step 3. Check your pockets and bag again. Sometimes the item just falls into a fold of your clothing. Make sure that the loss is real.

Step 4. Block cards and accounts. If a wallet or phone through which you use banking applications is missing, call the bank immediately (use the number you wrote down on paper) and block all cards. If your phone is stolen, try to remotely block it through the \"Find Device\" service.

Step 5. Find the nearest police station. Police stations in tourist centers are usually marked on maps. Go there. Even if there is little hope — a report of theft is necessary to get a certificate that you will need at the consulate and for the insurance.

Step 6. If your documents are stolen — go to the consulate immediately. A passport is your identity. Without it, you will not be able to fly or check into a hotel. The consulate will help you issue a temporary identity document or a certificate for return to your homeland.

Part four: after the police and consulate

You have filed a report with the police and received a notice of receipt (in some countries it is called a \"protocol\"). You were at the consulate and were issued a temporary document. What next?

Contact your loved ones. Inform them of what happened. If you lost your phone, use the hotel phone or ask passersby. Keep your loved ones informed so that they do not worry.

Contact your insurance company. If you have insurance that covers theft, report the incident. You will need a police certificate and a list of stolen items.

Review your plans. Perhaps you will have to change your route or postpone your trip due to the incident. This is unpleasant, but it is safe.

Pay attention to your state. Theft is stress. You may feel anger, fear, shame. This is normal. Allow yourself to experience these emotions, but do not let them control you. Remember: things are just things. Your safety is more important.

What nuances to know

Rules differ in different countries. In some countries, the police are required to issue a theft certificate on the spot, in others, you will have to wait a few days. In some cities, there are special tourist police stations where they speak English. Find out this in advance.

Be prepared for additional expenses. Restoring documents may be paid. If you lose tickets, you will have to buy new ones. If you do not have a reserve budget, ask for help from relatives or contact the consulate — sometimes they can help with emergency translation.

Never try to retrieve the item yourself. If you see a thief, do not enter into a conflict with him. You do not know if he has a weapon or accomplices. Your life is more important than your phone.

Conclusion: the algorithm is your best friend

Theft in an unfamiliar city is a test, but it should not destroy your journey. If you have a clear action plan, you will get through it faster and with fewer losses. Remember the main thing: do not panic, document, contact the police and consulate, block cards and documents. And remember — you are not alone. Millions of tourists have faced this and coped with it. You will cope with it too.
