Ta članek preučuje pojav tako imenovanih „enletnih semen“ — semen, ki prinesejo pridelek le v prvi generaciji in jih ni mogoče uporabiti za kasnejše sejanje. Na podlagi analize zgodovine tehnologije omejevanja genetske uporabe (GURT), znane kot „Terminator tehnologija“, pa tudi semen F1 hibridov, ki so trenutno na voljo na trgu, članek rekonstruira dejansko sliko tega, katere semene res potrebujejo letni nakup in zakaj.
